hi, i’m Tess.
Yoga teacher, nurse, freedive medic, accidental apnea enthusiast. How exactly did that happen? Funny story. In 2022, I was determined to become a more confident ocean swimmer. Having grown up in the mountains, my relationship with the big blue was naturally… limited. I thought for sure ocean swimming lessons were just the thing I needed to feel at home in the open water. Or so I thought… what I had really signed up for was a freediving course. It was hard to believe how much freediving felt like home. It fit in seamlessly with my yoga + meditation practices, and brought me the long-awaited community I had been craving after living in Sydney nearly 2 years. Not long after, I became very keen to learn more about the lungs + breathing muscles. I geeked out on the physiology of it. (Ask my coworkers about the kinds of in-services they get from me at the hospital, lol!) With my new knowledge and curious mind, I started adding lung stretches + breath holds to my yoga practice. And so the unofficial, official practice of ‘Apnea Yoga’ was born. I plan to continue exploring the combination of gentle breath holding + lung health for many years to come.
see you by the sea, xx
