What is apnea yoga?

Apnea Yoga is a method I created out of necessity to warm up before freediving. It’s the crossroads of body stretching + lung stretching. Think - creative vinyasa flow with short breath holds woven throughout class.

The purpose - to improve lung elasticity + increase CO2 tolerance. Why are these things important? Increased lung elasticity means you’re less likely to injure your lungs while deep freediving. It also increases oxygen efficiency. Over time, increased CO2 tolerance triggers higher red blood cell production - which then allows more oxygen to be carried around the body with less effort.

I started writing Apnea Yoga for freedivers, but anyone and everyone can enjoy + benefit from practicing. Studies also show increased CO2 tolerance is linked to better management of anxiety + depression. Powerful stuff.

My classes are an opportunity to practice curiosity, mindfulness, and play. If you’ve been to a handful of my classes, odds are you’ve heard me blab about the breath —> heart —> mind feedback loop. As a teacher, my hope is to engage your monkey mind + facilitate embodied flow. Classes are a sweet blend of funky + familiar - designed to get you out of your head and into your body.
